This time, I’m introducing The SUIKA STAND Hayama, a seasonal shop that opens only during summer in Hayama.
When you hear “watermelon smoothie shop,” you probably imagine a refreshing summer drink that is perfect for a hot day.
But this shop offers much more than that.
The stars of the story are Miura watermelons that could not be sold at the market.
Behind each drink is also the passion of Mr. Yoshida, an active music producer who is taking on the challenge of transforming those watermelons into something valuable.
This location is usually home to the popular udon restaurant Masu Udon DEKETACHI Hayama.
During summer, however, the restaurant becomes so hot that it is difficult to keep boiling udon noodles. For this reason, it transforms into a seasonal shop specializing in watermelon smoothies.
Behind every smoothie is a thoughtful story of supporting farmers, reducing food waste, and helping people enjoy the summer season.

Charm 1: Watermelons Once Destined to Be Discarded Take Center Stage

The SUIKA STAND Hayama uses watermelons from Marutsu Farm in Miura that do not meet conventional market standards.
These watermelons may have a small scratch, an uneven shape, or a little sun damage—minor imperfections that prevent them from being sold at the market.
Although they taste just as delicious, they are left with nowhere to go.
This project began with a desire to rescue those watermelons.
Mr. Yoshida purchases them directly from the farm and gives them new life by transforming them into refreshing smoothies.
“We want people to enjoy their delicious flavor, regardless of how they look.”
That simple yet meaningful idea is where this shop’s story begins.

“This is a drink that turns ‘what a waste’ into ‘thank you.’ I loved knowing that simply enjoying one can also support local farmers.”
Charm 2: The Pure, Natural Sweetness of a 100% Watermelon Smoothie

The smoothies at The SUIKA STAND Hayama are made with 100% watermelon and no added syrup.
But the process involves much more than simply blending the fruit.
Each day begins by cutting open large quantities of watermelons, removing the rind, and carefully picking out every seed by hand.
Even the removed seeds are not wasted.
After the seeds are left to rest, they release a naturally sweet juice. This juice is carefully simmered into a concentrated extract and then blended with fresh watermelon, bringing out its natural sweetness without adding any sugar.
It takes time and effort, but the result is the pure, refreshing flavor of real watermelon in every sip.
Because Miura watermelons are harvested only in summer, this special flavor can be enjoyed for just a limited season.

“I had no idea so much care went into making each one. It is perfect for watermelon lovers—and for anyone who wants to experience the taste of real watermelon.”
Charm 3: A Limited-Time Hayama Stand You Can Only Visit in Summer

The SUIKA STAND Hayama is open only during summer, from around mid-July until the end of August.
The space usually operates as Masu Udon DEKETACHI Hayama, but every summer the interior becomes extremely hot, making it difficult to continue boiling udon noodles.
Mr. Yoshida’s solution was to give the shop a seasonal transformation, turning it into a specialty watermelon smoothie stand—exactly the kind of place people appreciate during the hottest days of summer.
It becomes a watermelon stand in summer and returns to an udon restaurant in autumn. This way of changing with the seasons is part of what makes the shop so unique.
Watermelon harvesting also lasts only until around the Obon holiday period in mid-August.
Because it is a special drink available only during this brief season each year, more and more fans look forward to its return every summer.

“There is something wonderful about a shop that makes you think, ‘This season is finally here again!’ I hope it becomes a beloved summer tradition in Hayama.”
Charm 4: A Fresh Idea Created by an Active Music Producer
Mr. Yoshida, the person behind the watermelon stand, is an active music producer.
While working at the forefront of the concert and music industries, he also runs Masu Udon DEKETACHI in Hayama.
His decision to think beyond convention—“If it is hot, let’s create something made for summer”—reflects the creativity he has developed throughout his career.
The watermelon smoothies are also served at event venues and provided as backstage catering at concerts.
They have become a refreshing drink for artists and staff working through the heat at many different venues.

“I thought he simply ran an udon restaurant, but he is actually a music producer—and then he launched a watermelon stand too. His ideas are truly fascinating.”

The watermelon beach ball is the sign that the stand is open.
Charm 5: A Smoothie Created Together with Farmers in Miura

The watermelons used at The SUIKA STAND Hayama come from Marutsu Farm in Miura.
Mr. Yoshida’s goal is about more than simply selling watermelon.
He wants to ensure that delicious watermelons are not wasted just because they cannot be sold at the market, while creating new value together with the farmers.
Watermelons carefully grown by local farmers go on to bring smiles to people in Hayama.
This connection between local communities is another important part of the project’s appeal.
“Flavor matters more than appearance.”
That belief is poured into every smoothie.

“The people enjoying the smoothies are happy, and the farmers benefit too. I would love to see this kind of positive cycle spread even further.”
Charm 6: A Perfect First Stop on a Summer Day in Hayama
Along with its classic watermelon smoothie, The SUIKA STAND Hayama also serves summer-ready drinks such as the Spicy Watermelon Smoothie, Miyazaki Ripe Mango Smoothie, and Hayama Lemon Squash.
Before heading to the beach.
During a scenic drive.
Or while taking a break from exploring Hayama.
A cold, juicy drink offers the perfect escape from the summer heat.
This year’s season is expected to continue until around the end of August.
If you want to experience the taste of summer in Hayama, be sure to stop by.

“Rather than simply going for a watermelon drink, I hope people visit to experience the story behind it. That is what made this stand feel so special.”

This time, I ordered the Miura Watermelon Smoothie (800 yen). The moment I took a sip, the fresh, juicy sweetness of watermelon filled my mouth—it truly tasted like 100% pure watermelon.
Baby & Family Note
Each smoothie is freshly made to order, making it the perfect refreshment for a break on a hot day.
