A Breakfast With No Fresh Fish, in the Tuna Town of Misaki
Some mornings you wake up early and think, “I want a really good breakfast!” But there are surprisingly few places that are open in the morning, aren’t there?
That’s when I found “Asameshi Albe,” a little restaurant near Misaki Port in Miura City. It’s open from 6 AM to 10 AM, every day except its regular closing days.

I drove over from Hayama and arrived a little after 7 AM. The restaurant was almost full. Misaki is famous for tuna, yet the star at Albe is dried fish. In this article, I’ll tell you why, and what makes this place special.
Charm #1: In a Tuna Town, the Star Is Dried Fish
According to the official website, Albe wanted to change the image of “Misaki = tuna,” so it uses no fresh fish at all. Instead, it serves set meals made with dried fish from local dried-fish shops. (Source: Asameshi Albe official website)

I had the dried swordfish tail (1,300 yen) and the limited-quantity ash-dried mackerel set meal (1,400 yen). The flavor of the fish was wonderfully concentrated, and the generous bowl of rice disappeared in no time.

At first I thought, dried fish in a tuna town? But once I tasted it, I knew it was exactly right!

Charm #2: Daily-Changing Side Dishes and Miso Soup with Seasonal Vegetables
Each set meal comes with rice, soup, a side dish of Miura vegetables, and pickles. The side dish changes every day. (Source: Asameshi Albe official website)

I added a bacon and egg to my dried mackerel set meal. Breaking the soft-cooked yolk and letting the egg bounce over my rice was pure happiness. I was so full that I skipped lunch that day.

Charm #3: Owner Mirai Kikuchi’s Wish to “Protect Miura”
The owner of Albe is Mirai Kikuchi, who grew up in Misaki. Seeing more and more empty houses in her hometown, she felt that “if we don’t act now, nothing will change,” and that was what led her to open the restaurant.
An article on the TV program “Seven Rules” (Oggi.jp) described some of her special touches, such as changing the vegetable side dish every day and setting the shop clock five minutes fast. She doesn’t want her daily regulars to get bored, and she wants people who stop by before work to have a little time to spare. That kind of thoughtfulness is found all over the restaurant. It was a breakfast where I got to enjoy not only delicious food, but also her love for the town.

Charm #4: A Warm Interior in a Building Over 60 Years Old

The restaurant is a renovated wooden building more than 60 years old, a former simple lodging house for sailors. It is run by MISAKI STAYLE LLC, which also offers relocation consulting and start-up support. (Source: Tabelog reviews)
It’s a cozy place that fills up with about 10 people. When it’s busy, you write your name on a sheet of paper placed outside and wait. (Source: Tabelog reviews)
Notes for Visiting with a Baby or Kids

Whether strollers are allowed, whether you can come with a baby, and whether it works for a moms’ get-together are all unconfirmed.
According to Tabelog reviews, the restaurant has about 10 seats and isn’t a place to linger. Groups of five or more are also reportedly not accepted (please confirm). I think it suits a quick breakfast for a small group better than a long chat with friends. If you plan to bring children, it’s safest to check with the restaurant beforehand.
Information for Dog Owners

Whether dogs are allowed inside, and whether there is terrace seating, are unconfirmed. There is also no parking lot, so if you’re thinking of heading out with your dog, we recommend checking with the restaurant first.
