“Sometimes, I just want to try something different for lunch.”
Have you ever felt that way?
This time, I visited a Russian restaurant called “Hinotori,” located by Nobi Coast in Yokosuka.
It’s a place where you can enjoy piping hot dishes while looking out at the sea.
But this isn’t just a “rare cuisine spot.”
There’s a story behind it — a story that began with a desire to bring something new to this town.

A calm lunch by the sea

Climb the stairs and step inside, and the first thing you see is the ocean.
Beyond the windows stretches the quiet Nobi coastline.
It’s not loud or touristy.
Instead, it feels like a peaceful extension of everyday life.
Just sitting there, you’ll notice your mind slowly relax.

“This is the kind of place where you completely lose track of time…”
Watching tankers slowly pass by,
even conversations begin to soften and slow down.
Highlight 1: The origin of Hinotori — “Tsuboyaki”

When you think of Hinotori, you think of “tsuboyaki.”
It’s a dish where stew is placed inside a pot,
then sealed with dough and baked in the oven.
Break the top open with a spoon,
and fragrant steam rises as the creamy stew appears.
This time, I ordered:
・Grilled chicken, mushroom and cheese tsuboyaki (F set 1650 yen)
・Forest mushroom and cheese tsuboyaki (B set 2190 yen)
Tearing the bread and dipping it into the stew,
it’s simple, yet a flavor that stays with you.

“I love how interactive this dish is — it’s actually fun to eat.”
This dish actually traces back to the founder,
who discovered it while exploring restaurants in Tokyo and thought,
“I want to bring this to Yokosuka.”

Highlight 2: Russian cuisine made approachable

Russian food can feel a bit intimidating, right?
But here, everything is surprisingly easy to enjoy.
The piroshki is light and fluffy,
and the borscht has a gentle acidity that feels comforting.
It’s foreign cuisine, yet it blends naturally into everyday life.

“That feeling of ‘I can enjoy this even on my first try’ really matters.”
If you can’t finish your piroshki, you can take it home.
They even give you instructions on how to reheat it.
It’s these small, thoughtful touches that stay with you.

Highlight 3: A story that began with “bringing something new to Yokosuka”
The roots of this restaurant go back to 1982.
At that time, there were no Russian restaurants in Yokosuka.
“We want to bring something that doesn’t exist here.”
With that idea in mind,
the founder trained at a Russian restaurant in Tokyo and opened this place.
Later, the restaurant moved to its current location,
and today it continues to be run by the family.
The reason it has lasted so long
is not just the food,
but the quiet warmth that fills this space.

“Places like this… I really hope they never disappear.”

Highlight 4: A space preserved by family

The atmosphere inside feels somehow nostalgic.
The gentle voices of the staff,
and the cheerful greeting from the chef.
Nothing feels staged or artificial.
There’s a sense of comfort that only long-standing places have.
You come for the food,
but before you know it, the space itself is what soothes you.
Family-friendly Note

Children are welcome.
As seating is limited, it’s recommended to make a reservation.
Perfect for a relaxed family lunch.
