This time, I visited “The Pass,” a beautifully renovated kominka café in Hase, Kamakura.
On this day, I left Zushi Station at 6:30 in the morning for a solo trip to Kamakura. I rode the morning Enoden, stopped by the sea near Kamakurakokomae, and then came back to Hase.
If you are wondering, “Is there somewhere nice to have breakfast before visiting Hasedera Temple?” this is a place I would happily recommend.

Charm 1: Open from 7:30 AM, a Perfect Start for a Solo Kamakura Morning
One of the best things about The Pass is that it opens at 7:30 in the morning.
When visiting Kamakura, starting early is the best way to avoid the crowds. But cafés where you can relax early in the morning are surprisingly limited.
I visited on a Friday morning and arrived just before opening time. There were already about three people waiting, including a stylish woman with a laptop and her dog, who looked like a regular customer.

“Taking a moment to plan the day over coffee in morning Kamakura. That alone made the trip feel like it had already begun.”

Charm 2: A Beautifully Designed Kominka Café Surrounded by Greenery

The Pass is a café renovated from an old Japanese house.
Kamakura has many kominka cafés, but this one left a strong impression with its beautifully curated atmosphere. It was also introduced in a Hanako feature by writer Ririko Amakasu, who has lived in Kamakura for around 60 years.
Inside, the café has a calm, warm feeling with natural wood throughout. Outside, there are garden seats, wooden tables, benches made from logs, and a spacious veranda-like area.
Surrounded by greenery, the morning air felt especially refreshing. Although it is located in a popular sightseeing area, it felt as if I had stepped into a quiet part of everyday Kamakura life.
Charm 3: A Quiet Breakfast with an Iced Latte and Banana Bread

Here’s what I ordered during my visit.
○ What I Ordered
Iced Latte – ¥650
A refreshing cup that was perfect after a morning walk.
Banana Bread – ¥600
Soft, gently sweet, and made to be enjoyed with coffee.
The banana bread worked equally well as a light breakfast or a mid-morning treat. Nothing flashy, just the right amount of comfort to start the day.
I was heading to Hasedera Temple afterward, so I appreciated having a breakfast that felt satisfying without being too heavy.
Charm 4: A Flexible Space That Welcomes Dog Owners

During my visit, I noticed several guests enjoying the café with their dogs.
According to Tabelog, pets are allowed, and many reviews mention visitors relaxing with their dogs both inside and on the terrace.
From what I experienced, the outdoor garden area and the spacious earthen-floor style interior seemed especially comfortable for dog owners.
Policies may change depending on seating availability or crowd levels, so if you’re planning to visit with your dog, it’s best to check the café’s Instagram beforehand.
Charm 5: The Perfect Stop Before Visiting Hasedera Temple
The Pass is located close to Hase Station, making it an ideal place to begin a morning exploring Hase and Hasedera Temple.
On this particular day, I enjoyed breakfast at The Pass at 7:30 AM before heading to Hasedera just before 8:00. Since it was hydrangea season, a long line had already formed outside the temple, but I had reserved my hydrangea admission ticket in advance and entered smoothly.
Starting the morning with a quiet coffee before joining the crowds at Hasedera turned out to be the perfect rhythm for the day.

“Instead of rushing straight into a tourist attraction, starting the morning with coffee gave me a little extra space to breathe.”

Traveling with Children

The café offers counter seats, table seating, and terrace seating. According to Tabelog, there are 17 seats in total, plus outdoor seating.
Because the café is popular even in the morning and maintains a calm atmosphere, it may be better suited for a quiet visit with children rather than a large group gathering. Information regarding stroller accessibility and baby facilities has not been confirmed.
Dog-Friendly Information
Tabelog lists The Pass as a pet-friendly café.
I also saw several guests visiting with their dogs. The garden seating and spacious interior make it feel like a comfortable stop during a dog-friendly walk around Kamakura.
However, seating policies and conditions may vary, so checking the café’s official Instagram before visiting is recommended.
