This time, I took a little trip from Hayama to Yokosuka-Chuo.
The place I visited was “Bagel cafe nico.”, a small bagel shop just up the slope from the station.
Inside the display case were colorful, characterful bagels. In the back, there was a cozy eat-in space surrounded by books.
“When was the last time you found a place where you could truly relax on your own?”
This was not just a place to buy bagels. It was a place to enjoy a quiet moment for yourself.

Charm 1: A Cozy Space Like a Small Library Surrounded by Books
The first thing that caught my attention when I entered the shop was the eat-in space in the back.
Books of many different genres lined the shelves, creating an atmosphere that felt just like a small library.
The owner used to work as a librarian, and you can feel her love of books throughout the space.
I picked up a picture book that felt almost like an English dictionary. It explained English words with illustrations, making everything easy to understand.
And most of all, the drawings were adorable.
This may be the kind of place where you encounter books you might never have found otherwise.

“It felt less like a café and more like a secret hideaway for book lovers.”

Charm 2: A Place Where Even Waiting Time Becomes Enjoyable

When I spoke directly with the owner, one thing she said stayed with me.
“I want people who come alone to feel comfortable and take their time.”
Even if customers have to wait a little, books can make that waiting time enjoyable.
That is why she keeps books in the café.
The owner used to work as a librarian.
Because she truly loves books, I felt she wanted to create a space where even waiting becomes part of the experience.
The name “nico.” comes from the wish that people will smile and feel happy when they eat the bagels.
Just as the name suggests, the whole shop was filled with a gentle, welcoming atmosphere.
Charm 3: The Hot Cheese Toasted Bagel Was Incredible

Here’s what I ordered this time.
○ What I Ordered
・Café au lait 600 yen
・Cheese bagel 220 yen
・+250 yen to make it a cheese toast bagel
The cheese bagel is made with plain dough filled with two kinds of cheese.
When toasted hot, the melted cheese stretches beautifully.
Crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside.
Simple, but deeply satisfying.
You can also add:
・+350 yen for cream cheese and ham
・+150 yen for unsweetened cream cheese
I’m definitely trying the ham version next time.

Charm 4: Spending Time Slowly with a Bowl-Sized Café au Lait

What surprised me most was the café au lait.
It was huge.
Much bigger than I expected — honestly, it felt more like a bowl than a mug. A true bowl-sized café au lait.
Even after finishing the bagel, there was still plenty left.
Perfect for slowly sipping while reading a book.

“Sometimes you walk into a place and instantly think, ‘Oh, I’m going to like this place.’ This was one of those places.”
I think this might have been the biggest café au lait I’ve ever had.
Charm 5: Delicious Even as Takeout — The Enjoyment Continues the Next Morning

These are the bagels I brought home.
・Blueberry 200 yen
・Brown Sugar Walnut 200 yen
・Cheese 220 yen
I reheated them in my toaster the next day, and they were still delicious.
Slightly crisp outside, chewy inside.
One of the best things about bagels is that you can take tomorrow morning’s happiness home with you.

Charm 6: A Different Discovery Every Time with Daily Bagel Specials

Looking at the display case, it’s impossible not to hesitate.
According to the official website, around 13–14 kinds of bagels appear daily.
Seasonal flavors and colorful creations make every visit different.
“Places where you want to keep searching for your favorite item always make you want to come back.”
That sense of excitement and discovery may be why people return again and again.
Baby & Family Note

The café space is compact with limited seating.
Because of this, it feels more suitable for quiet visits with one child or small groups rather than large gatherings.
Stroller accessibility and baby-friendly facilities are unconfirmed.
Takeout may be the easiest option during busy hours.
