This time, I visited “Hiyori Shokudo,” a cozy local restaurant in Hayama Isshiki.
Hiyori Shokudo is a place I personally visit often. It sits right across from Sotetsu Rosen Hayama, making it a restaurant worth remembering if you are looking for lunch in Hayama.
From the outside, it has a simple, hut-like appearance. It may not look fancy at first glance, but once you open the door, a warm wooden interior welcomes you, and the atmosphere immediately feels calm and comforting.

“Places like this make me think, ‘Oh, I might really like it here,’ the moment I step inside.”
I visited a little later than the main lunch rush on a weekday, but the restaurant was almost full. There were regulars chatting casually, people stopping in for a quick workday lunch, a daughter dining with her elderly mother, and what seemed to be visitors exploring Hayama. The room was full of everyday life.

Charm 1: A Warm Local Restaurant That Blends into Everyday Hayama Life

Hiyori Shokudo is a small restaurant in Hayama Isshiki. According to Tabelog, it has counter seats and tatami seating, and is used by families with children, solo diners, and groups of friends.
The appearance is simple, but once inside, the warmth of the wood and the presence of people make the space feel deeply relaxing. Rather than the glamour of a sightseeing spot, it feels naturally woven into the everyday lives of people who live in Hayama.
If you are thinking, “I want lunch in Hayama, but somewhere calm and unpretentious rather than overly stylish,” this is exactly the kind of place that will stay with you.
Charm 2: The Live Feeling of Watching a Husband and Wife Work in Perfect Rhythm

What impressed me most this time was how beautifully the couple worked together.
The wife prepares the plates, serves the rice, and brings out the soup. Meanwhile, the husband handles each order one after another, cooking stir-fried vegetables, fried chicken, and other dishes with steady rhythm. When the soup runs out, he quickly makes more in between orders. The whole flow was so smooth and beautiful that I found myself watching from the counter.

“I love restaurants where even the waiting time feels enjoyable.”
The sound of vegetables being chopped, the rhythm of stir-frying, the sound of freshly fried food. Then the wife quietly carries out each finished dish. There is no flashy performance, but the whole space is filled with the unmistakable atmosphere of a truly good restaurant.
Charm 3: Set Meals with Lots of Small Side Dishes That Make You Happy

One of the things that makes Hiyori Shokudo special is that the meals are not just about the main dish. Each set meal comes with several small side dishes, which instantly makes the table feel generous and complete.
Many Tabelog reviews also mention the carefully prepared side dishes, vegetable-based small plates, hearty miso soup, pickles, and rice that come together to create a balanced meal.
This time, I ordered the fried chicken set meal for 1,300 yen. Crispy freshly fried chicken alongside several side dishes gave the meal a real feeling of satisfaction.
There was also a stir-fried pork and local vegetable set meal for 1,350 yen that day. Watching it being cooked from the counter made me think, “That has to be my next order.”

Charm 4: Daily Specials That Let You Enjoy Hayama One Plate at a Time

Another reason people return to Hiyori Shokudo is the rotating daily menu.
On the day I visited, the menu included fried chicken (1,300 yen), stir-fried pork with local vegetables (1,350 yen), simmered sardines with ginger (1,400 yen), and fried bonito with grated daikon and ponzu sauce (1,400 yen).
Fish dishes, vegetable stir-fries, fried dishes. Nothing feels overly complicated, but everything feels thoughtfully made. Reviews often mention local vegetables and seasonal ingredients, while the restaurant’s Facebook page describes its philosophy as “local ingredients, local produce, and seasonal foods enjoyed at their best.”

“Restaurants that make you wonder what today’s menu will be always make you want to come back.”
Charm 5: Set Meals by Day, Izakaya by Night

According to Tabelog, Hiyori Shokudo opens for lunch from 12:00 to 14:30 and reopens at night from 18:00 to 21:30. In the evening, it transforms into a neighborhood izakaya.
A proper set meal during the day. Drinks and small dishes at night. It feels like the kind of place locals would want to keep coming back to, no matter the time of day.
An article from Coco House written around the time the restaurant opened mentioned comments from neighbors like, “We’re happy because there weren’t many lunch places around here,” and “We’ve been looking forward to this.” It is easy to see how strongly the community welcomed this place from the beginning.

Baby & Family Note
According to Tabelog, children are welcome at Hiyori Shokudo. It is listed as suitable for families and has tatami seating, making it a possible option for family lunches. Since the restaurant is compact and can get crowded even on weekdays, checking ahead about stroller access or tatami availability is recommended. Detailed information for babies and infants is unconfirmed.

Dog Information
Dog-friendly policies are unconfirmed. It did not appear to have terrace seating during my visit. If you plan to visit with your dog, checking directly with the restaurant is recommended.
