This time, I’m introducing Yamanoue Bakery & Cafe, located in Tadodai, Yokosuka.
As the name suggests, this cafe sits a little up on a hill. I visited by car on a rainy day, following the directions posted on the owner’s Instagram. But when I reached the narrow road, I thought, “Wait… am I really supposed to turn in here?” and drove right past it once.
Still, after gathering a little courage and heading down that narrow street, I found a cafe quietly tucked above a staircase. It really felt like a hidden retreat.
The shop used to operate as a bakery, but it has now been renewed as a cafe. At lunch, you can enjoy wood-fired bread, dishes made with Miura vegetables, handmade baked sweets, and cakes.

“Do you also love places that feel like a tiny adventure just to reach them?”

Highlight 1: A Secret Hideaway Cafe in a Renovated Old House on the Hill

Yamanoue Bakery & Cafe is within walking distance from Keikyu Kenritsu-Daigaku Station, yet it sits quietly beyond a residential area, away from the busier streets.
The cafe is located at the top of a staircase, and if it is your first visit, you may wonder, “Is this really the right way?” But that little uncertainty makes the moment of arrival even more exciting.
According to reference information, the cafe is set inside a renovated old house, creating a calm atmosphere filled with the warmth of wood. There are also sofa seats, making it the kind of place where you naturally want to slow down and stay awhile.
It may not be the most convenient cafe on a main road, but that is exactly why it offers such a special, out-of-the-ordinary feeling.

Highlight 2: Wood-Fired Bread and Beef Stew You’ll Want to Scoop Up to the Last Drop

On this visit, I ordered the Wood-Fired Bread and Beef Stew set, which comes with two slices of bread, salad, and three deli side dishes for 1,900 yen.
The beef stew had been simmered for a long time, and the meat was so tender it nearly fell apart. Once I dipped the wood-fired bread into the rich stew, I honestly could not stop eating.

“I used the bread to enjoy every last bit of the stew. This is definitely the kind of dish that makes you want to order extra bread.”
In fact, even though the set already came with bread, I ordered two extra slices for 420 yen. It was so good that I even wanted to take some home.

The newcal article also introduces the cafe’s dedication to bread-making: the dough is slowly fermented with natural yeast and baked in a wood-fired oven. The intense heat of the oven gives the bread a fragrant, crisp exterior while keeping the inside pleasantly chewy.
Highlight 3: Healthy Lunches Filled with Fresh Miura Vegetables
Besides the beef stew, the lunch menu also includes the “Spiced Keema Curry with Seasonal Vegetables” (1,800 yen) and the “Miura Vegetable Quiche” (1,800 yen).
The keema curry is served with multigrain rice and seasonal vegetables from Miura. The quiche is a generously sized handmade dish filled with fresh local vegetables.
Each lunch set also comes with salad and three deli side dishes, making it perfect for those days when you want something filling while still enjoying plenty of vegetables.

The cafe also sells the same Miura vegetables used in the lunch dishes near the register. Being able to take home vegetables you just enjoyed at lunch is such a lovely touch.

Highlight 4: Don’t Forget the Homemade Ginger Drink and Baked Treats

For my drink, I ordered the Homemade Hot Ginger Drink (750 yen).
Made with a spicy ginger syrup packed with fresh ginger and spices, it instantly warmed my throat with a powerful kick. One sip and you immediately feel, “This must be good for my body.”
Next to the entrance, there is also a cake cooler filled with handmade sweets and baked treats. Both dine-in and takeaway are available.

I picked up a Chamomile Scone (360 yen), an Oatmeal Cookie (360 yen), and a seasonal Orange Earl Grey Cheesecake (680 yen) to take home. Everything tasted thoughtfully handmade, and the enjoyment continued long after I got back home.

“When a cafe makes you want to bring home desserts too, you know the experience was special.”

Highlight 5: The Warm World Created by a One-Person Cafe Owner

The menu includes a note explaining that the cafe is run by just one person.
Orders are placed directly with the owner, and while she does her best to serve everything quickly, visiting with a relaxed mindset is probably the best way to enjoy the experience.
The Co-Trip article introduces owner Arisa Nakamura, who handles everything from customer service to baking herself. The cafe first opened in 2017 and shifted to a cafe-focused style in 2021.
Unlike efficiency-driven chain cafes, this place carries the personality and atmosphere of one person’s vision. Even if things take a little longer, it somehow becomes part of the charm.

Baby & Family Note

According to the available information, children are welcome here, including babies, preschoolers, and elementary school children. Strollers are also allowed.
That said, the cafe is located above a staircase, and the route from the parking area can feel a bit confusing at first. If you plan to visit with a stroller, checking the directions beforehand is recommended.
The atmosphere is calm and relaxing, making it a nice place for small gatherings with friends. Since the cafe is run by one person, however, it may be better suited for smaller groups rather than large parties.

Dog-Friendly Information

According to the owner’s Instagram, many guests visit with their dogs and use the terrace seating.
However, whether dogs are allowed inside the cafe has not been confirmed.
Surrounded by nature and tucked away in a quiet neighborhood, it feels like a lovely place to stop during a walk with your dog.
If you are visiting by car, it is worth checking the route in advance. The road leading to the parking area is extremely narrow, and first-time visitors may hesitate and wonder if they are going the right way.
I actually drove past it once myself before realizing it was correct.
The cafe’s Instagram has a pinned post explaining exactly how to reach the parking area, so checking that beforehand is highly recommended.

If You’re Visiting by Car
If you are driving, a little preparation is recommended.
The road leading to the parking lot is very narrow, and first-time visitors may feel nervous wondering, “Can this really be the right way?”
I honestly felt the same and accidentally drove past it once.
The cafe’s Instagram has a pinned post with detailed parking instructions, so it is highly recommended to check it before visiting. The key moment is courageously turning left at the very first crossroad after passing the gas station. Once you do, the scenery suddenly starts matching the owner’s directions perfectly.

Be brave and keep going down the narrow road. Trust me — there really is a parking lot waiting at the end ☺️
