Today, I’m introducing a truly refreshing café right in front of the sea in Sajima.
“I wish there were a calm spot to stop during a drive.”
“It’s surprisingly hard to find a café where you can relax with kids—or with your dog.”
Have you ever felt that way?
This time, I visited PORTLANDS cafe, newly opened in Sajima.
It has an ocean view, yet somehow feels peaceful and down-to-earth—an unusual kind of comfort.

Charm 1: Right by the Sea—Yet Calm, Not “Overly Resort-like”

PORTLANDS cafe is located just steps from Sajima Fishing Port.
The sea stretches out in front of you, and small fishing boats sit quietly in the harbor.
When you hear “ocean view,” you might picture a very touristy place—but this feels different.
The view is wide open, yet the atmosphere is incredibly gentle.

The ocean is so close, yet my mind felt totally calm. That’s why you end up wanting to stay.
Charm 2: The Building Itself Feels Thoughtfully Designed

A newly built, two-story space in clean whites.
There are terrace seats on both the first and second floors—and both are covered.
The design blocks harsh western sunlight, so it doesn’t feel blinding, even in summer.
The first-floor terrace was lively with guests visiting with their dogs, while upstairs feels wonderfully open with sweeping sea views.
If you think “terrace seats are hot and glaring,” this place pleasantly proves you wrong.
Charm 3: American-Style Volume and Sweetness

What I enjoyed this time was:
・Special Waffle with Caramel Nuts
・Caramel Latte
The waffle was generously sized, topped with plenty of cream.
Served with ice cream, the very first bite instantly brought an “American” sense of indulgence.
If you have a sweet tooth, this is the kind of dish that stays in your memory.
Charm 4: A Café Born from the Owner’s Own Vision

The owner of PORTLANDS cafe is originally from Portland, USA.
He previously worked in Japan as a programmer.
“I wanted a job where I could interact directly with people.”
“I wished there were a café you could casually stop by while driving along the coast.”
Those thoughts led him to open this café in Sajima.
The building is equipped with solar panels, and materials were chosen with sustainability in mind.
The wide, column-free interior was designed to let guests enjoy both the sea and the surrounding hills.

There’s something truly convincing about “creating the place you yourself want to go.”
Baby & Kids Note

The interior is spacious, with wide aisles throughout.
Strollers are welcome, and the bright atmosphere makes it easy to relax even with young children.
It’s also a comfortable spot for a casual café meetup with other parents.
Dog Information

Dogs are welcome on the first-floor terrace only.
Leash hooks are available.
Even large dogs can relax comfortably thanks to the generous spacing.
Access Information
The parking lot is surprisingly spacious—even I, who’m not confident at parking, found it easy. A very welcome point!
