Today, I’m introducing a heartwarming encounter I had at Zaimokuza Beach in Kamakura—featuring none other than the local celebrity cat Kiiro-chan and the seasonal delight of freshly harvested spring wakame seaweed.

If you’re looking to escape the crowds and spend a slow, healing time by the sea, this is just the spot.

Let me show you a taste of the peaceful coastal charm that soothes both mind and body.

Highlight 1: Meet Kiiro, the Beachside Idol of Kamakura

As you walk along Zaimokuza Beach, you’ll come across a small fishing hut where locals and tourists alike often pause. That’s where Kiiro-chan lives—a cat who even appeared on NHK’s popular program “Mitsuaki Iwago’s World Cat Walk.”

Born in the fishing hut of Mr. Muraki, a local fisherman, Kiiro-chan patrols the beach like a boss cat—but he’s incredibly friendly and loves posing for pictures.

Peli: I visited 10 times before I finally met him… and it was worth every try!

He’s truly the idol of Zaimokuza. If you’re lucky, you might even see his adorable sidekick, “Kobun.”

Highlight 2: Spring Seaweed Straight from the Fishermen

Next to Kiiro’s hut, there’s a self-serve stand selling freshly harvested spring wakame for just 500 yen!

After a quick blanching, the seaweed turns a brilliant green. Enjoy it in a shabu-shabu or salad—it’s crisp and bursting with ocean flavor.

Peli: I made wakame shabu-shabu at home with ponzu sauce—so simple, so satisfying!

Note: This seasonal treat is usually available only between February and March. I was lucky to get some this time—maybe next year you can, too!

Highlight 3: A Stroll Through the Nostalgic Streets of Zaimokuza

Zaimokuza offers a different side of Kamakura, with a calm, old-town charm that gently embraces you. With liquor stores, bathhouses, and a retro-style shopping street, the area feels like a step back in time.

Walk through the nostalgic streets and down the narrow lanes that lead you to the beach. Surf shops line the coast, and when the waves are good, you’ll see locals rushing with surfboards in hand. It’s the perfect seaside town for a morning or evening stroll.

For those looking for a hidden, healing spot in Kamakura, Zaimokuza is a must-visit.

Note for Families with Babies & Children

Zaimokuza Beach is spacious with many paths that are stroller-friendly. Unlike central tourist spots, the area isn’t too crowded, making it ideal for families to take relaxing walks along the shore.

In front of the fisherman’s hut where Kiiro-chan lives, there are minimal steps, so it’s also a safe spot to stop and take photos.

Dog-Friendly Info

The beachside walking trail is very popular among dog owners. In the mornings and evenings, you’re likely to run into friendly local dogs for a quick hello.

However, there are also cats around the fisherman’s hut, so be sure to keep your dog on a leash. If your dog tends to bark, approach with care.
