Yushige: A Hidden Gem for Fresh Seafood in Hayama – Run by a Local Fisherman

ぺり

Hi, I’m Peli from Hayanavi!
We bring you the best spots in Hayama.
We’re updating Instagram almost every day—don’t forget to follow us! Instagram link

This time, let me introduce “Yushige,” a beloved seafood restaurant located by Manase Port in Hayama.

Run directly by the fishing boat “Yushigemaru,” this little-known local treasure offers ultra-fresh seafood, including their signature shirasu (whitebait). The owner is actually an active fisherman, catching the fish himself and preparing them for your plate. It doesn’t get more authentic than this!

Even on weekdays, lines form outside this popular spot. Let’s dive into what makes it so special!

Highlight #1: Caught and Cooked by the Fisherman – Unmatched Freshness

“Yushige” is run by an active fisherman operating the shirasu fishing boat “Yushigemaru.”
Every morning, the owner himself sets sail from Shibasaki Port to catch whitebait and local fish.

The shirasu is caught using a unique method called Issou-biki (single boat towing), rare even in the Shonan area. This quick five-minute trawl ensures the shirasu remain translucent and incredibly fresh.

The just-caught shirasu is then boiled with only natural salt, without any additives. The result? Soft, delicately salty morsels that go perfectly with rice.

Follow their Instagram for updates on the day’s catch—perfect for timing your visit when fresh shirasu is available!

Highlight #2: Stunning Coastal Setting for a Premium Seafood Bowl

“Yushige” is located in the seaside fishing town of Manase, Hayama.
Although you can only catch glimpses of the sea from inside, the restaurant sits just steps from Sagami Bay—a prime spot for shirasu fishing. You’ll smell the ocean as soon as you arrive.

At lunchtime, they serve up generous seafood bowls (¥2,980), two-flavor rice bowls (like boiled shirasu and bonito), and more—all showcasing the best of the day’s catch.

When I visited, I went with the popular “Kaisen-don” (seafood bowl). With tuna, greater amberjack, raw shirasu, boiled shirasu, shrimp, salmon, squid, and more, this bowl was a vibrant celebration of the sea.

The quality is outstanding, and the portion size is sure to satisfy.

It’s picture-perfect and super satisfying—your eyes, your taste buds, and your stomach will all thank you!

Highlight #3: Heartwarming Hospitality in a True Fishermen’s Town

Yushige’s rustic charm reflects the down-to-earth hospitality typical of traditional fishing villages. From the building’s exterior to its cozy interior, everything radiates the warmth of a genuine, unpretentious seaside eatery.

The owner, a seasoned fisherman, and the friendly staff create a relaxed atmosphere that even first-time visitors can enjoy without hesitation. Not sure what to order? Just ask them to recommend something from the chalkboard menu — you’ll be in good hands.

Arrive early and you might catch their limited Kama-yaki set (grilled tuna collar) for 1,900 yen — one of the local favorites.

Note: Many popular dishes tend to sell out around 1 PM, so arriving around opening time is highly recommended!

Family-Friendly Info: Babies & Kids

The interior mostly features table seating and does not provide special equipment like high chairs, but babies and small children are welcome.

Since space is limited, strollers may be difficult to maneuver inside. We recommend using a baby carrier or visiting during off-peak hours for a smoother experience.

Bringing Your Dog?

Currently, there is no official information about pet access. There are some outdoor spaces near the restaurant — we suggest contacting the restaurant directly if you’re planning to visit with a dog.

Summary: A Fisherman’s Passion in Every Bite

Yushige is more than a seafood restaurant — it’s a true showcase of the sea’s bounty and a fisherman’s pride.

From the clear, shimmering shirasu to the fatty cuts of local fish, everything reflects authentic, heartfelt craftsmanship from ocean to plate.

Even as a visitor, you’ll feel the kind of warmth and familiarity that usually only locals get to experience. It’s a must-visit destination in Hayama.

Be sure to put it on your lunch list!
