This time, let me introduce you to an authentic Thai restaurant called “Baan Rey Hayama.” Located along Route 134, it’s a rare find for Thai cuisine in Hayama.

The restaurant is run by a talented Thai chef named Wan, who brings the flavors of Thailand to life while ensuring they remain approachable for Japanese palates. Its stylish atmosphere and a variety of lunch sets make it a favorite among locals, drawing in a steady stream of diners—even on weekdays!

I had the pleasure of visiting this gem during lunchtime and was blown away by the flavors and charm of the place. Here’s everything you need to know about “Baan Rey Hayama.”

Highlight 1: Authentic Thai Dishes with a Mild Spice

When you think of Thai food, the first thing that comes to mind is often “spicy!” But at “Baan Rey Hayama,” you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Chef Wan’s dishes are known for their mild yet authentic flavors, making them perfect for those who aren’t fans of overly spicy food. Fun fact: Chef Wan herself isn’t a fan of spicy dishes!

I ordered the “Sen Lek Nam” (1,400 yen). This noodle soup is a comforting blend of chicken broth, rice noodles, minced pork, chicken breast, and bean sprouts. The broth was gentle yet rich, making it a perfect pick-me-up meal—especially after a long day or a late night out. The rice noodles are light and healthy, giving you a sense of fullness without feeling heavy.

Each table is equipped with a “Kruang Phrung,” a set of traditional Thai condiments. You can adjust the flavor with fish sauce, vinegar, or chili powder. Pro tip: add a little chili powder at a time—don’t be like me, who added too much and started coughing!

Highlight 2: A Stylish Interior for a Relaxing Getaway

Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by a spacious interior with high ceilings and greenery hanging elegantly from above. The ethnic, resort-like ambiance makes you feel like you’ve been transported to a chic restaurant in Thailand.

The restaurant also features a small shopping corner where you can browse Thai-imported clothes and accessories. These make great gifts for friends or souvenirs for yourself!

Highlight 3: A Wide Variety of Affordable Lunch Sets

One of the standout features of Baan Rey Hayama is its amazingly affordable pricing. At just 1,400 yen (including tax), the lunch sets offer incredible value, especially in an area like Hayama where dining out can often be pricey. For locals, Baan Rey is truly a hidden oasis!

The menu offers plenty of variety, with options such as:

  • Pad Thai Kung (Stir-fried rice noodles with shrimp)
  • Khao Man Gai (Thai-style chicken rice)
  • Gapao Rice
  • Green Curry

Each dish is generously portioned and packed with authentic flavors. The Pad Thai Kung, for instance, combines chewy rice noodles with juicy shrimp in a perfectly balanced sweet and savory sauce. It’s hard to choose just one!

When I visited, the restaurant was almost fully booked, even on a weekday! If you want to avoid the crowds, I recommend going during a later lunch hour.

Peli’s Memory: A Dish That Takes Me Back

Back in university, I had many Thai friends who would cook delicious, authentic Thai dishes for me. One of them even spilled fish sauce (Nam Pla) in my car, leaving a strong scent that lingered for months—an unforgettable memory, to say the least!

When I tasted the food at Baan Rey Hayama, those nostalgic memories came flooding back. The dishes are authentic yet approachable, with a balance of flavors that I truly appreciated. It’s a place where you can enjoy the essence of Thai cuisine without overwhelming heat or spice.

Baby-Friendly Notes

Baan Rey Hayama is a child-friendly space where parents can dine comfortably with their little ones. The restaurant is entirely non-smoking. Plus, the mild flavors of their dishes make them suitable for kids, too!

Pet-Friendly Information

Unfortunately, there is no terrace seating, and pets are not allowed inside. However, if you’re out exploring Hayama with your furry friend, consider grabbing some takeout to enjoy at a nearby park or beach.
