When you visit Hayama or the Miura Peninsula, don’t you feel like eating some delicious seafood?
But actually, it’s not just restaurants — a fish shop itself can be the ultimate gourmet destination.
This time, I visited “Taisho Suisan,” a fresh seafood shop located right in front of Sajima Fishing Port in Yokosuka.
There, I encountered unbelievably fresh fish and a staff member who truly loves fish — Mr. Takeshi Yamada.

I never knew a fish shop could be this interesting…!
In this article, I’ll introduce the charm of Taisho Suisan and Mr. Yamada’s deep love for fish based on my visit.

Highlight①: Truly Fresh Fish Thanks to the Location Right by the Fishing Port

The biggest attraction of Taisho Suisan is definitely its incredible freshness.
The shop sits right in front of Sajima Fishing Port.
That means fish caught at the port are quickly brought directly to the shop.
In front of the store, you’ll see horse mackerel, sardines, local fish, shellfish, and seaweed lined up.
Some of them are even still alive, which is a completely different sight from a typical city fish shop.
Mr. Yamada happily showed me one fish whose head looked almost transparent and said:
“Look at this — the head is almost see-through. Amazing, right? You won’t find fish like this at a normal supermarket.”
When I actually touched the fish, the body was still firm and elastic — not stiff from rigor mortis yet.
That alone showed how high the quality here is.
The fresh wakame seaweed was also a seasonal treat.
I was surprised at how delicious wakame could be.

Highlight②: Why Fish Lovers Visit — A Unique Supply from Semi-Pro Fishermen
One thing that surprised me while I was there was people bringing in fish they had just caught.
During my visit, several anglers came in carrying freshly caught fish.

Wait… this is actually a way they source fish?
At Taisho Suisan, fish caught by local anglers sometimes appear in the shop.
That means fish that were swimming in the ocean just moments ago can end up on the counter.
This is one of the reasons why the seafood here is so exceptionally fresh.

Highlight③: 30 Years with Fish — The Endless Passion of Takeshi Yamada

The person who left the biggest impression during my visit was the staff member, Mr. Takeshi Yamada.
Mr. Yamada has been working with fish for more than 30 years.
Before coming here, he worked in the seafood section of a supermarket.
But the more he learned about fish, the more curious he became.
He wanted to go deeper and understand more.
Eventually…
“Before I knew it, I had moved closer and closer to the fishing port,”
he said with a smile.
Back when he worked at the supermarket, he loved fish so much that he was even called a “fish nerd” by coworkers.
Even so, he continued to pursue his passion for seafood.
Now he works right in front of Sajima Fishing Port.
“Being able to handle fish this fresh every day… it makes me really happy.”
Listening to him talk, I truly felt that this man genuinely loves fish.

Talking with Mr. Yamada made me happy too.
Please ask for him when you visit! I’m sure you’ll become a fan of Mr. Yamada.
Highlight④: Friendly for Beginners — They Even Teach You How to Prepare the Fish

Do you ever feel that fish shops can be a bit intimidating?
To be honest, I felt the same way at first.
But Taisho Suisan is completely different.
If you ask how you want to cook the fish, they will suggest the best way to cut and prepare it.
They can prepare fish not only as fillets, but also ready for grilling.
They even clean the fish and remove the guts right there with a knife.

I always thought fish shops were intimidating, but here even someone like me who isn’t good at cooking can buy fish comfortably!
That made the whole experience feel very welcoming.
Highlight⑤: The Best Grilled Horse Mackerel I’ve Ever Had
Here’s what I bought that day.
• Fresh wakame seaweed — 300 yen
• Horse mackerel — 300 yen each
• Squid — 2600 yen
The squid was swimming in the tank, and they prepared it as sashimi right after dispatching it.
The tentacles were wonderfully crunchy.
Fresh squid really tastes completely different.

But the biggest surprise was the horse mackerel.

Mr. Yamada cleaned it and prepared it perfectly for grilling.
It was actually my first time eating whole grilled horse mackerel…
And it was the most delicious horse mackerel I’ve ever had in my life.

I never knew grilled horse mackerel could taste this good!
I might not be able to go back to supermarket fish anymore…

This experience was honestly addictive.
I seriously felt like I could come here once a week.
Baby & Family Note

The shop is a compact fish market, but it mainly operates as a takeout-style seafood shop.
This means you can easily stop by with a stroller and make a quick purchase.
It’s convenient even when visiting with small children.
Dog Information

Because this is a food retail shop, dogs may not be allowed inside (confirmation recommended).
However, since it is mainly takeout, it’s easy to stop by during a walk with your dog.
