This time we would like to introduce “Unagi no Naruse” which opened this fall in Hayama 🙌.
It is a newly opened eel restaurant located in the center of Hayama, where Moribei Soba noodle restaurant used to be.
The eel restaurant opened with three missions: to make eels more accessible, to make eels healthier, and to make eels more beautiful.
Introduction of Unagi no Naruse
Location
Eel Naruse” is located along the main street that runs straight from Zushi Station, a 25-minute walk, just barely walkable.
It is an ideal distance for a stroll.
Of course, there are buses running. It takes about 10 minutes by bus.
There are about 2 parking spaces by the side of the store. Traffic is heavy for Hayama, so please be careful with parking.
Hayama has no station. If you use public transportation, take a bus from JR Zushi Station.
Establishment
Eel Naruse” opened in September 2024.
There are many other restaurants besides the Hayama branch, and it looks like they are developing a franchise.
In just less than two years, “Unagi no Naruse” has surpassed 200 stores and is said to be creating a whirlwind in the industry. It seems that the main selling point is that you can enjoy authentic eel at less than half the price of conventional eel restaurants.
After all, there is a limit to how cheaply an individual restaurant can purchase eel.
All eel restaurants are expensive, so I am grateful that they make eel more accessible at reasonable prices.
Introduction of the restaurant
The restaurant is a renovated Japanese-style store that used to be a soba noodle shop.
It is a white building that looks like a traditional Japanese storehouse called “kura”.
When we entered the restaurant, it was brightly lit and had a two-story structure with high ceilings.
The store is new and bright. The high ceilings give a sense of openness.
The restaurant just opened about a month ago, so there were flowers on display.
They seem to use rice from Fukushima. The rice was also sticky and fluffy.
We were let through to the first floor seating. This is what the table seating looks like.
There is also a counter, which is good for a single person to quickly finish his or her eel and come out.
We were also shown the second floor seats.
Kindly, thank you very much.
There were also four or five seats on the second floor. There was also a small private room that could be used for family gatherings.
Unagi (eel) can be enjoyed from 1,600 yen!
Now, here is the menu. It seems that they serve both domestic eels and Japanese eels farmed overseas.
The menu consists of eel and drinks. By not offering an extra menu item, they are trying to increase turnover and reduce training and other costs.
It is a franchise strategy.
We ordered the special eel Matsu (4,400 yen) and the top eel Ume (1,900 yen).
We were told that the extra high quality eels are domestically grown and harvested in Japan, while the high quality eels are Japanese eels farmed overseas.
Now, the special eel arrives.
The eel is a special eel. The meat is very firm.
It is the best combination with rice.
A special eel of this size costs 6~8,000 yen in Tokyo, so even 4,400 yen is probably reasonable.
For me, a commoner, it is still expensive.
This is the plum on eel that I, a commoner, ordered. It is more than beautiful enough.
The difference between Matsu, Take and Ume is the size of the eel. I am on a diet, so I am satisfied with Ume.
And as for the taste, I am ashamed to say that as a commoner, both the top and the extra high quality were delicious, and I honestly could not tell the difference in taste.
I once went to Hamamatsu (where you can eat best eel) to have an eel course at a very high-class restaurant, but I could not tell the difference between domestic wild and farm-raised eels, because farm-raised eels were tastier.
I think it is good enough even for ordinary, so maybe next time I will have ordinary~.
The soup was also well done.
Baby and child note
Babies and children are welcome.
doggie memo
Unfortunately, there is no terrace seating, so if you have a dog, take out and eat it at nearby Morito beach!
