Opening: Looking for a place where you can truly slow down?
“Is there a café where I can really slow down?”
Have you ever felt that way?
If so, this is a place I’d truly recommend.
I visited MARKA CAFE&SPACE, a charming old-house café where you can spend time looking out over the sea of Sajima.

“I honestly felt like time moved differently here…”

Highlight ①: Like visiting your grandmother’s home — a space that gently relaxes you

MARKA is a café known for its warm atmosphere created inside a renovated traditional house.
From the veranda, you can see the ocean, with soft light pouring in.
It feels like “coming back to someone’s home.”
The sound of the breeze passing through and the presence of nature outside.
All of these come together to create
a place where you can truly relax with all your senses.
Highlight ②: A unique lunch plate you didn’t expect—but will love

This time, I ordered
the rice flour hot sandwich plate (1,300 yen).
Inside, you’ll find Sajima whitebait, rolled omelet, and seaweed.
At first glance, it feels like a Japanese set meal.
But the combination with bread works surprisingly well.

“I’ve never had anything like this… but it’s really good!”
There are also dishes like
homemade soy meat taco plate (1,250 yen)
and tuna confit (1,600 yen),
offering a lineup of unique menu options.

Highlight ③: Healing time with Daifuku, the café’s beloved cat

Another charm of this café is
Daifuku, the café’s resident cat.
Pure white and incredibly friendly,
he gently welcomes everyone who visits.

“He came up to me right before I left… I completely fell in love.”
For cat lovers, this is
a café where you can enjoy truly healing moments.
Highlight ④: A slow pace you can only experience with a one-person operation

This café is mainly run by just one person.
Because of that, it may take a little time for your food to be served.
But that’s part of the experience.
Rather than rushing,
it’s a place for those who can enjoy the waiting itself.
Highlight ⑤: The story behind this place — the owner’s choice

The comfort you feel at MARKA
comes from the story this place holds.
The owner, Terada-san, once lived in Tokyo,
but chose to move to Sajima in search of a different way of life.
What she found was this old house,
once used as a traditional learning space (terakoya).
It is also said that a famous writer once stayed here,
making it a place layered with history.
While preserving that legacy,
it has now been opened as a café and creative space.
What Terada-san envisioned was
“a place that feels like home.”
A space where she could say “welcome home” to her child,
and where visitors could feel the same warmth.
That feeling is what shapes the atmosphere here.

“It’s quiet, but there’s a real warmth here.”
This is not just a stylish café,
but a place that feels like an extension of everyday life.
That is what makes MARKA truly special.

Highlight ⑥: Gentle bread born from love for family

Another core part of this café is
the additive-free bread made with 100% Kyushu rice flour.
This bread began with
the presence of Terada-san’s daughter.
As she needed to avoid wheat,
the wish was simple: “I want her to enjoy bread safely.”
That wish led to the creation of this rice flour bread.
Not satisfied with existing products,
she kept refining the recipe until reaching the current taste.
Soft and moist,
yet light and crisp when toasted.

“This is what a truly gentle taste feels like.”
This bread is not just a menu item,
but something born from love for family.
That’s why it naturally connects with the atmosphere of this place,
and brings a sense of comfort to everyone who visits.
