Opening: Why Is This Unadvertised Sushi Restaurant So Popular?
Have you heard of “Ken Sushi,” a sushi restaurant in Hayama? Despite having no social media presence or website and doing zero advertising, this restaurant is beloved by locals and always bustling with customers.
I recently visited this hidden gem and was truly amazed by the sincerity of the staff and the incredibly fresh sushi. Today, I’d love to share the charm of “Ken Sushi” with you!
1. Highlight #1: Fresh Ingredients and Unbeatable Value
One of the greatest appeals of Ken Sushi is its exceptionally fresh ingredients offered at amazingly reasonable prices.
Lunch Menu:
- 1 serving: 1,400 yen (tax included)
- 1.5 servings: 1,950 yen (tax included)
The 1.5 servings are highly recommended by the chef! It includes premium items like medium-fatty tuna, scallops, and sweet shrimp in addition to the regular serving. The rice is smaller in size, making it easy for even women to finish it off effortlessly.
2. Highlight #2: Sushi Served on Bamboo Leaves
At “Ken Sushi,” sushi isn’t served on plates but on bamboo leaves, with each piece brought out freshly made. This unique presentation not only looks beautiful but also enhances the sushi’s freshness and flavor.
For example, the 1.5 serving includes:
- Tuna, squid, shrimp
- Medium-fatty tuna, scallops, sweet shrimp
- Egg, cucumber rolls, dried gourd rolls
The tender anago (sea eel) with a rich sauce and the fluffy tamago (egg) stamped with the restaurant’s logo are also must-try highlights. Every single piece reflects the chef’s dedication to his craft.
Bonus: Here’s the lineup of the premium toppings included in the 1.5 servings—incredible value for the price!
3. Highlight #3: Warm Atmosphere and Friendly Owners
The interior of Ken Sushi is simple, with an L-shaped counter offering just seven seats, making it an intimate and cozy space. The friendly chef and his wife always welcome you with warmth.
While the restaurant is often filled with regulars, first-time visitors won’t feel out of place. The approachable chef is always happy to chat, making it a comforting experience for everyone.
I always thought sushi restaurants were a bit intimidating, but Ken Sushi felt completely different! The warm atmosphere created by the chef and his wife made it such a pleasant visit
4. Highlight #4: Don’t Miss the Chawanmushi and Miso Soup
In addition to sushi, the accompanying chawanmushi (savory egg custard) and miso soup are absolute delights. The chawanmushi, featuring shiitake mushrooms and crab sticks, offers a delicate, comforting flavor that’s perfect for taking a moment to relax. Considering everything is included in the lunch set, the value is simply unbeatable.
5. Family Tips: Bringing Kids Along
The counter seating might not be ideal for large family gatherings or mom meetups. However, it’s perfectly fine to bring your family with young children or babies. It’s best to call ahead to ensure smooth seating arrangements.
6. Pet-Friendly Note
Unfortunately, Ken Sushi does not have terrace seating, and pets are not allowed inside.
