⛰️ A Hidden Gem in the Countryside
Located in the Kamiyamaguchi area of Hayama, Cafe Kai-ei-ro is surrounded by serene rural landscapes. It’s a peaceful retreat away from the bustling beachside, where the natural scenery welcomes you.
The café’s house-like structure exudes nostalgic charm, featuring a cozy interior adorned with a wood-burning stove and guitars, reflecting the owner’s love for music
They have had a few live events in the past. Although it does not seem to be held regularly now, many professional musicians and artists come to the store as customers.
So it has become a gathering place for music lovers.
Spending time in front of the wood stove looking at guitars…how wonderful! It creates such a warm atmosphere.
When I went there, the wood stove had not yet appeared, so I would like to revisit again.
A packed parking lot. A popular restaurant with many customers waiting even on weekdays. Even if you come early, there are many days when you cannot be guided.
It is recommended to make a reservation!
🍴 Delectable Menu with Unbeatable Value
The lunch menu at Cafe Kai-ei-ro is a showcase of the chef’s dedication to quality. Popular dishes include:
- Hainanese Chicken Rice (with salad & drink): ¥1,480
- Seafood Curry (with salad & drink): ¥1,480
- Demi-Glace Hamburger Steak (with salad & drink): ¥1,580
I tried the Hainanese Chicken Rice, and the tender chicken paired perfectly with fragrant jasmine rice—it was a delightful experience!
Lunch also comes with an enticing deal:
- Additional drinks for just ¥200
- Desserts like cakes and ice cream for ¥450
Don’t miss the handmade Lemon Pie or Rich Baked Cheesecake—they’re simply divine!
Now I see why this café is a favorite for mom meetups. Exceptional quality, affordable pricing, and a relaxed atmosphere—what’s not to love?
🧑🍳 Meet the Chef: A Story of Passion and Perseverance
Chef Muraki-san, a native of Hayama, has pursued his culinary dreams through an incredible journey.
After obtaining his chef’s license, he honed his skills at renowned restaurants and hotels. Though health challenges led him to step away from cooking for a time, his passion for becoming a chef never wavered.
Muraki-san eventually returned to the culinary world, combining his vast experience to open Cafe Kai-ei-ro in 2017.
Chef Muraki’s resilience and dedication to his craft are truly inspiring. His story resonates deeply with me—it’s a reminder to never give up on your dreams.
Drawing from his grandmother’s legacy of creating a “heartfelt and welcoming space,” Chef Muraki crafts dishes that blend global flavors with a personal touch, delighting every guest.
🏡 A Legacy Reimagined
The café’s name, “Kai-ei-ro,” originates from a Beijing-style restaurant once run by Chef Muraki’s grandmother during wartime.
After returning to Japan, she continued sharing her culinary expertise, eventually opening the original Kai-ei-ro in 1973 near Hayama’s Imperial Villa.
Today’s Cafe Kai-ei-ro carries forward her spirit, blending the best of East and West into a cozy and innovative café that invites everyone to feel at home.
Knowing the café’s rich history makes every meal here feel even more special. It’s amazing how stories can bring food to life.
🍰 Sweet Moments: Handmade Desserts and More
Cafe Kai-ei-ro isn’t just about lunch—the handmade desserts are equally enticing. Their Handmade Cake Set (¥1,100), featuring treats like Lemon Pie and Rich Baked Cheesecake, is perfect for a relaxing café time.
Pair these desserts with the cozy warmth of the wood stove, and you have a recipe for pure bliss.
Baby and child note
Children are welcome, but as the restaurant aims to be a space where adults can relax, small children who make a lot of noise may be discouraged.
