Today I’d like to introduce “Kawashō,” a well-known unagi (eel) restaurant in Horiuchi, Hayama. When locals say “If you eat eel in Hayama, this is the place,” they mean here. When I visited, the eel was exactly as I imagined — fluffy inside, perfectly crisp on the outside, with a refined, gently sweet sauce. You can really taste the care in every bite.

This spot is perfect if you’d like to enjoy a proper Japanese meal during your Hayama sightseeing, have a calm lunch with friends, or explore a long-established local restaurant as a business owner.

Hayama is full of cafés, but people get bored if it’s only that. I want to highlight these kinds of “proper local meals,” too.

Highlight ① Fragrant, tender Unagi-jū

The star at Kawashō is, of course, the unagi-jū. There are three sizes — Matsu, Take, and Unadon (bowl) — so you can easily choose depending on how much you want. Even the Take set is satisfying, with a perfect balance between the soft, fluffy meat and the lightly charred aroma. The sauce is subtle and not too sweet, blending beautifully with the rice.

What makes it unforgettable is that freshly grilled fragrance. Every bite carries the warmth of charcoal and the deep umami of the eel. Kawashō’s unagi isn’t showy — it’s a dish that reflects quiet craftsmanship and care.

Highlight ② Calm, bright, house-style interior

Rebuilt in 2012, the restaurant has a fresh, clean atmosphere like a small house-style restaurant. The interior features natural wood tones and a welcoming warmth, making it easy even for first-time visitors to feel comfortable. With only around 14 seats, it’s a cozy space where you can truly relax over your meal.

Lunch is served from 11:00 to 14:00 (last order 13:30), and dinner from 16:00 to 20:00 (last order 19:30). Many restaurants in Hayama close early, so this is a great option if you prefer to dine early in the evening.

Highlight ③ A beloved local classic with warmth

Kawashō has long been loved by the local community. The atmosphere is calm and gentle, filled with a quiet sense of warmth and familiarity. You’ll often see families or elderly couples who seem to be regulars — proof that this restaurant is deeply rooted in Hayama life.

When introducing Hayama to first-time visitors, it feels reassuring to say, “Locals love this place too.” That sense of trust matters.

Baby & Family Note

Because seating is limited, bringing in a stroller may depend on how crowded it is. The restaurant is marked as “child-friendly,” so families with kids are welcome. To have a relaxed experience, visit right after opening or during a quiet weekday lunchtime.

There’s no listed information about child seats or diaper-changing areas, so it’s best to call ahead if needed. It’s a lovely place for a slightly special lunch with your child once they’re a bit older.

Dog-friendly Information

Since Kawashō is a traditional Japanese restaurant, dogs are generally not allowed inside. There’s no terrace or pet-friendly seating noted. If you’d like to grab food to enjoy during a walk, check with the restaurant directly about take-out availability. (Unconfirmed)

Summary

Kawashō in Horiuchi, Hayama serves beautifully grilled, fragrant eel in a calm and intimate setting. Loved by both locals and visitors, it’s ideal for a quiet lunch or an early dinner. If you’re visiting with kids, avoid peak hours. For dogs, assume it’s not pet-friendly. Keep those two points in mind, and you can enjoy your meal worry-free.

In a town filled with charming cafés, this is one Japanese restaurant worth remembering as a timeless local favorite.
