We share the beauty of Hayama through the eyes of the local community.
Today, let’s visit Uosa — a legendary seafood restaurant near the Manase fishing port in Hayama, where lines form even before opening time.
Whenever someone asks, “Where should we have lunch in Hayama?” this place always comes up.
It’s the kind of diner where you can enjoy crispy, fluffy fried horse mackerel while feeling the sea breeze from the nearby harbor.

Highlight ①: Over a Century of Tradition — True Fisherman’s Cuisine
Located right by the sea, near Manase Port, Uosa started as a fishmonger and has now been serving meals for more than a century (source: Tabelog).
The building looks modest from the outside, but by the time the doors open, a long line has already formed.
Even on weekdays, especially during summer, there’s always a queue. To get a first-round seat, arriving before noon is a must.
On weekends, arriving around 11:30 a.m. is just barely early enough for the first seating.
What makes people wait this long? The answer is simple — exceptional freshness.

“There’s a real reason behind that line.” That’s exactly what this place makes you feel.

Highlight ②: The Sashimi Set — Freshness Straight from the Port
Just steps from the sea, this sashimi set meal brings the ocean’s aroma right to your table.
This time I tried the assorted sashimi set (2,500 yen), a traditional platter served with small side dishes and miso soup — its presentation alone takes your breath away.
The platter featured tuna, cutlassfish, flounder, golden alfonsino, and squid — all freshly caught that morning.

The cutlassfish stood out — translucent, tender, and so delicate that you could almost taste the sea breeze itself.
The natural fat of the fish was perfectly balanced, and just a touch of soy sauce brought out the flavor beautifully.
The miso soup, made with shijimi clams, had a deep, comforting broth that lingered on the palate.

Don’t forget to check the whiteboard for the day’s local fish — it always lists the chef’s freshest recommendations!

Highlight ③: The Mixed Fry Set — Generous, Crispy, and Full of Flavor
Another crowd favorite is the Mixed Fry Set (2,200 yen).
The selection changes with the season, but on this visit it included two shrimp, conger eel, cutlassfish, horse mackerel, and sardine — a truly generous lineup.
The coating was light and crispy, while the inside stayed juicy and tender.
The soft, airy texture of the eel and cutlassfish was especially impressive.
A bottle of thick brown sauce sits on the table, and a wedge of lemon adds a bright, refreshing contrast.
It’s the kind of meal that leaves you thinking, “That was a feast of the sea.”

Highlight ④: Entry Rules — Groups of Six or More Not Allowed
One thing many reviewers mention is the restaurant’s strict seating policy.
Groups larger than six are not accepted (reason unconfirmed), and the staff appear to prefer serving smaller parties so that everyone can enjoy their meal calmly and comfortably.

I actually saw someone turned away at the door because their group wasn’t complete. So yes — be sure everyone arrives together!

Baby & Kids Note
The restaurant seats around twenty people and stays cozy, but families with small children are welcome.
That said, strollers may be difficult to maneuver during peak hours, so coming a little earlier or later is recommended.

Dog-Friendly Info
Pets are not allowed inside the restaurant.
