Today, let me introduce you to Sunny Side Kitchen, an authentic American diner tucked away in the peaceful countryside of Hayama.
Located in the lush Kikonai area, this spot transports you the moment you step inside — it feels like you’ve crossed into another country.
You might find yourself wondering, “Am I really still in Japan?” That’s how deeply the food and atmosphere channel authentic American vibes.
Let me walk you through what makes this place so special!

Highlight 1: Juicy Burgers and BBQ Platters That Hit the Spot
For lunch, we ordered the Classic Burger and the BLT Sandwich.
The BLT in particular blew us away — the bacon was cut so thick it looked like a steak!

It had just the right smoky aroma and juicy texture to make every bite a memorable one.

The menu also features items like the “Gorgonzola Honey Burger” and a rotating “Weekly Lunch Plate,” so there’s always something new to try.
And don’t miss the weekend-only BBQ Combo featuring brisket, spare ribs, pulled pork, and smoked sausage — a true taste of America.

This was one of those meals you just want to dive into — every bite was fun!
Highlight 2: Like a Scene from a Movie — Retro American Atmosphere
The interior is designed like a roadside diner straight out of the American South, with plenty of space, cozy sofa seating, and counter seats for solo visitors.

The high ceilings create an open and airy feel, and on weekends, you’ll often hear people chatting in English.
Many visitors come from the nearby U.S. Navy base, and honestly, it really feels like you’ve stepped into America.

It really reminded me of those classic American movies — even if you come solo, you’ll feel like the star of your own story.

Highlight 3: Chef Mitsuru Ozawa’s Passion and Dedication
The culinary soul of Sunny Side Kitchen lies in the hands of its owner-chef, Mitsuru Ozawa, whose deep-rooted experience and unwavering commitment shine through in every dish.
Originally working in the fisheries industry, Ozawa made a bold career shift into the food world. He began training at renowned Tokyo restaurants like T.Y. HARBOR and CICADA, part of the popular TYSONS & COMPANY group. Later, he honed his craft at Yokohama’s beloved American-style eateries, Bubble Over and Troubadour, under the MOTHER LUCY restaurant group.
What defines his culinary philosophy is an uncompromising honesty in preparation, respect for ingredients, and the patience to do things right.
Driven by the desire to serve “authentic American food—not junk food, but real, satisfying meals”, Ozawa insists on making his own sauces and seasonings whenever possible, crafting dishes free from additives and full of heart.
His devotion to American cuisine was inspired by countless hours watching cooking shows, real-life culinary experiences abroad, and years spent sweating in professional kitchens. With a clear belief that “customers can sense authenticity,” he chose Sunny Side Kitchen as the perfect stage for his vision.
The choice of location often surprises visitors. “Why open a restaurant way out here in the hills?” they ask. But for Ozawa, it was love at first sight — the large south-facing windows, spacious kitchen, and peaceful natural surroundings sealed the deal.
As of 2024, the restaurant proudly celebrates its 5th anniversary. It now stands as Hayama’s only true American-style diner, drawing loyal fans from near and far.

Baby & Kid-Friendly Note: Spacious Seating and Tatami Rooms
Inside the restaurant, you’ll find Japanese-style sunken kotatsu seating and sofa spaces—perfect for families with babies or toddlers. Stroller access is available, too.
There’s also a dedicated kids’ menu, making it a great option for mom-friend meetups or casual family lunches.
The peaceful location means you can relax and enjoy your meal without worrying about noise or disruptions.

For Dog Owners: No Terrace Seating, But There’s a Workaround
There’s no confirmed pet-friendly terrace or dog area, but the restaurant offers takeout, so you can grab your meal and enjoy it picnic-style nearby.
With a spacious parking lot, many locals stop by with their pups for a quick pick-up and scenic lunch nearby.
